The final project of the
Multimedia Technology Learning and Interface Design module, involved a student
from the Multimedia Technology course and Applied Graphics course being
paired up, each to work on their respective part of the project. Due to
number shortages I was put with another Mutlimedia student, which worked
out for the better as we both had to produce work from both sides of the
project brief.
This Computer Assisted Learning assignment was aimed at teaching school
children the workings, beliefs and living habits of early settlers on the
isle of Skara Brae. Using animations, interactive quizzes and suitably displayed
information, this project takes into consideration child learning theories.
The CD was programmed so when it started it prompted the user to enter their
name. Throughout the application pupil scores were recorded and an option
was created to allow the teacher to print off the results and monitor pupils
progress.
This project was simply
to create a website for a fledging Daycare Company in Edinburgh. This was
my first website commission and a massive Learning Curve for my Web Development
Skills. A Simple Background layout was requested however it is brought to
life through the use of some Clever Animations and Superb Illustrations
by Emma Liddell. The colour scheme was yet an Unusual blend of
colours. Decked out in the companies Cranberry Purple and Pale Dense Green,
I strived to Relate the colours as best as I could, I am more than Happy
with the results.
The animations were one of the more Satisfying products of this project.
The Morphing animation was created using Director and it was exported as
a Shockwave file, but what made it for me was the Powerful drawings by the
children at the daycare centres, typically Abstract and Bursting with Expression.
This project was created
in Director as an end of year assignment for my HND. My aim was to create
an interesting, informative and functional promotional CD for a popular
Glasgow night spot.
I experimented a lot with Animations, Movies, Music and Colours within this
project. It even included a VR Movie, that instead of using the Colleges
VR suited Tripod, myself and a good friend decided to create our own out
of an old Turntable and bits of wood. The result wasn't seamless but it
worked and I was more than happy with end product.
I wanted to get the feel of the bar across by using the colours of the interiors
within the CD, as well as, using cartoon style themed animations.
Overall the project was a success but as I have developed of the years I
would not mind going back to it and sorting out the obvious problems with
my new found skills and knowledge.
The Final project of my
degree year, involved myself and three others Designing and Implementing
an Interactive Handheld Tourist Guide from scratch. This project was superb
as it incorporated a number of aspects of Multimedia, such as Brainstorming,
selecting what points to keep, problem solving; how to achieve the results
that we wanted, creation of the interface as well as the physical device,
working within a group, using each others strengths to achieve targets,
too mention a few. I was in charge of designing and creating the interface
whilst always including what the group had agreed on and specified.
I was delighted with the project as a whole and the group that I was in
was a pleasure to work with and we really worked well to make sure that
the project was of a high standard.
The module was 'www.Authoring
Systems' and this was going to be the first time that I waould be introduced
to Dreamweaver and HTML.
The modules Final Project was a Competition put to the students to take
the existing Tenovus website and with what we had learned, Update and Jazz
up the current design. The main areas that were taken into consideration
in the marking of the entries, was the Design, Navigation, Layout and the
User Friendliness of the website. Having Strengths in Design already I Concentrated
on the other three areas of the project, in order to develop a better understanding
of what is involved in Website Creation and the Software used to create
it.
Though not winning the competition I was more than Satisfied with what I
had got out of the project as a whole, all Personal Goals were achieved.
This commision was for a Student Night and Happy Hour promotion at Fixx II. The Pub had such a vivid Deep Orange and Lime coloured Turquoise colour scheme, that I knew an equally striking flyer would be needed in order to capture the atmosphere of the popular Glasgow venue. Unusual graphics that were dotted around the bar were also create tools for working with, though earlier designs became to crowded, therefore I decided to stick to one, the Column. This graphic when centered was such a Strong and Powerful image and I feel that it balanced out Flyer as a whole. The warm emmiting glow gives a sense of Warmth and almost Friendly feeling. The novelty of this commision came when I was ask to Flyer and Promote the evenings around the city. It was great to see peoples reaction and asking there opinions on the design.
The EK NEWS job provided me with a great chance to develop on my Illustrative side of design. Working to fortnightly deadlines on current affairs, this job work give me an insight into what would be expected within this line of work. With frequent liaison between entertainments editor and other journalists, commissions to caricature any relevant personalities within the news proved steady and gave the paper an extra edge. this opportunity would also start off my side line of Sporting Caricatures.
The examples (Clockwise from the top left) are: The East Kilbride 50th Birthday cartoon, the town was officially opened in the 1947. I linked this with the famous Alien Roswell incident. Adam Ingram after Labour won the election, he won the East Kilbride seat. Liam and Noel Gallagher and Sean Connery also illustarted.
This area of work spawned from working as an Cartoonist and Illustrator at the EK NEWS. What started off as commisions for family and friends soon spilled into friends of family and friends. Generally creating the popular current World Footballers in their respective colours. Occasionally the unusual request of World Footballer of the Year at the time, 'Ronaldo' in a Partick Thistle would make for an interesting commision.
The selected example is of 'Faustino Asprilla', the Columbian Internationalist, whom at the time was setting Tyneside alight playing for Newcastle United.
The Fly Tying Catalogue
2003 was the first project given to me at the Glasgow Angling Centre. Never
before in the United Kingdom has there been a Catalogue for the popular
past time. Having no knowledge of Fly Tying let alone Fishing, I Compiled,
Photographed, Typed, Designed, Structured, Edited and Created this 52-page
'bible' over a 6-month period. With no prior experience with Adobe InDesign
this project was a real learning curve right from the start.
Working with the Manager of the Fly Tying department, he would provide the
textual information as well as the Products for me to photograph. Images
were also obtained by contacting the manufacturers of the products and asking
them to send us their images.
This assignment has been the Biggest that I have Started and followed all
the way to the End. I am delighted with the outcome of this project and
already have started work on the 2004 annual, which I have no doubt will
be a massive improvement on its Ancestor.
